ESRI Canada's Garden in the Sky

From paved terrace to nature-friendly roof garden

Client ESRI Canada

Our client’s vision for transforming this existing 9th floor terrace began with a feasibility study to determine load capacity and waterproofing requirements, which helped secure project approval from the building’s owner. Designed to be visually stimulating when viewed from inside, the garden provides functional outdoor space for meetings, events and breaks. It’s also a natural habitat for birds and other pollinators.

Key to the garden’s design is the integration of distinctive large conifers over structural columns and the use of 53 types of grasses, sedums, shrubs, herbs and flowers. The plantings form an insulating layer, which helps reduce the building’s summer cooling costs and contributes to the city’s goal of minimizing the urban heat island effect. The garden also delays and filters storm water run-off and retains up to 75% of summer precipitation.
