Dynamic Earth Science Park

Playing with the science of mining

Client Science North

Northern Ontario’s largest tourism attraction, Science North, wanted to develop an outdoor experience at their Dynamic Earth site, home of the Big Nickel. Designed to celebrate Sudbury’s hard rock mining heritage, the outdoor park features three active play zones for children. Authentic, full-sized mining equipment is used to help tell the story of mining through imaginative, mining-related play experiences.

Children can flow like molten rock down a slag slide, ride a seismic wave machine and stand inside an ore car. The dump box of a massive underground truck forms the stage for the amphitheatre where live demos and shows about mining can be presented. Informative signage provides fascinating facts unique to mining in Sudbury.
